Mathematical Models and Reality - a Constructivist Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
To explore the relation between mathematical models and reality, four different levels of reality are distinguished: observer-independent reality (to which there is no direct access), personal reality, social reality and mathematical/formal reality. The concepts of personal and social reality are strongly inspired by constructivist ideas. Mathematical reality is social as well, but constructed as an autonomous system in order to make absolute agreement possible. The essential problem of mathematical modelling is that within mathematics there is agreement about ‘truth’, but the assignment of mathematics to informal reality is not itself formally analysable, and it is dependent on social and personal construction processes. On these levels, absolute agreement cannot be expected. Starting from this point of view, repercussion of mathematical on social and personal reality, the historical development of mathematical modelling, and the role, use and interpretation of mathematical models in scientific practice are discussed. ∗Research Report No. 304, Department of Statistical Science, University College London. Date: June 2009.

A Constructivist View of the Statistical Quantification of Evidence
> Problem • Evidence is quantified by statistical methods such as p-values and Bayesian posterior probabilities in a routine way despite the fact that there is no consensus about the meanings and implications of these approaches. A high level of confusion about these methods can be observed among students, researchers and even professional statisticians. How can a constructivist view of mathema...
متن کاملThe Radical Constructivist View of Science
From the constructivist perspective, science cannot transcend the domain of experience. Scientific theories are seen as models that help to order and manage that domain. As the experiential field expands, models are replaced by others based on novel conceptual constructs. The paper suggests the substitution of ‘viability’ or ‘functional fit’ for the notions of Truth and objective representation...
متن کاملRe-solving the Learning Paradox: Epistemological and Ontological Questions for Radical Constructivists
Over 30 years ago, a debate between Jean Piaget and Noam Chomsky revived an ancient learning paradox filst intioduced by Plato (Piattelli-Palmarini, 1980) Chomsky challenged Piaget to explain how one could constrnct more advanced knowledge horn one's existing (less advanced) knowledge Chomsky argued that, without such an explanation fo1 learning, we must assume the innativist position that all ...
متن کاملNelson’s Work on Logic and Foundations and Other Reflections on Foundations of Mathematics
This paper starts by discussing Nelson’s philosophy of mathematics, which is a blend of mathematical formalism and a radical constructivism. As such, it makes strong assertions about the foundations of mathematic and the reality of mathematical objects. We then offer our own suggestions for the definition of mathematics and the nature of mathematical reality. We suggest a second characterizatio...
متن کاملTeaching in 3D: Pedagogical Affordances and Constraints of 3D Virtual Worlds for Synchronous Distance Learning
Three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds are a new technology that holds some promise as constructivist learning environments for distance education. This investigation presents an evaluative case study of the pedagogical implications of using one 3D virtual world, Active Worlds, for synchronous distance education. The research design for this qualitative study focuses on the pedagogical affordanc...
